CASE STUDY

IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT GLASSES

Martha, 56 years old.

Case study by our in-practice optometrist Dr. Alex Du. To prioritise confidentiality, we have altered the patient’s name.

Meet the patient

Introducing Martha, a 56 year old patient whom we’ve been unable to see for a few years. An alternative optometrist advised Martha her prescription had not changed much, however, she now finds herself wearing spectacles most of the time, even for distance. (In the past, she only used spectacles for reading.)

While semi-retired, Martha still spends quite a bit of time on the computer. She is also ‘sick of spectacles’ and looking into contact lenses as another option.

Eyecare Plus’s assessment

Following a comprehensive eye test, it was revealed that Martha had mild cataracts. Cataracts are a common eye condition that causes the lens of the eye to become cloudy. This cloudiness can make it difficult to see clearly and can lead to blurry or hazy vision.

Referral to Ophthalmologist warranted

Martha is an excellent candidate for intraocular lens (IOL) implants such as a Vivity lens, a type of intraocular lens that has been developed by Alcon, a leading eyecare company. The Vivity IOL is designed to provide extended depth of focus, which means it can improve vision at multiple distances, including near, intermediate, and distance vision. This lens is particularly intended to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.

Since Optometrists do not perform cataract surgeries, we referred Martha to seek consultation with an eye specialist (Ophthalmologist).

At Eyecare Plus, our optometrists are equipped with state-of-the-art tools that enable us to detect various eye diseases including cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye disease, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and other eye conditions even in their early stages. Early detection is crucial for prompt intervention by our experienced team or, in cases like Martha’s where cataract surgery is needed, a referral to an eye specialist for further evaluation and care.
